Above the village of Weem
Route: Above the ancient village of Weem
Distance: 19km
Ascent: 500m
Grade: Strenuous
Time taken: 6-7 hours
This is a scenic and interesting walk which starts and finishes at the Black Watch Memorial in the bustling Highland Perthshire town of Aberfeldy. The route starts by crossing the River Tay on the historic Wade bridge and then follows a good path to the little village of Weem with its old coaching inn. The route then uses a good path to climb up the south facing slopes above the village, with the option of making a detour to see St David's Well. The path goes through a forest to reach the deserted steadings at Rawer, from where there is a great view of Ben Lawers.
The route then follows a track up through a forest to reach the open moor near Cnoc Rawer. After passing old shielings, the route reaches Loch Farleyer. On a good day, the moor offers great views of the Glen Lyon hills and Schiehallion. The route then follows a good track to the little village of Dull – twinned with the US town of Boring! There is also an option to shorten the walk by dropping down to Camserney rather than Dull. The old kirk in Dull is worth a visit as is the cafe at Highland Safaris! The route then follows paths along the lovely banks of the River Tay back to Aberfeldy.
