The Black Castle, Moulin (by Perthshire Treks)
Port-na-Craig, Pitlochry (c) Perthshire Treks

This is a lovely half-day walk around Pitlochry, offering some great views and an excellent introduction to the area.

The walk usually starts and finishes at the Pitlochry iCentre. The walk takes in the spectacular Black Spout, a 20m waterfall, the ruined Caisteal Dubh (the “Black Castle”) and the pretty village of Moulin, with its old coaching inn and brewery. Our route then takes you past the Dane's Stone and The Cuilc, and then down to Loch Faskally, the dam and its famous fish ladder. We finish by crossing a bouncy bridge! The walk follows mainly good paths and tracks, but we do cross a field to reach the Caisteal Dubh. The walk is 8.5km, with an ascent of just over 200m, and usually takes about 4 hours.

Stones of the Ascent

This super half-day walk starts and finishes at the Pitlochry iCentre in the main street of Pitlochry. The route takes in the "bouncy" suspension bridge to Port-na-Craig, part of the Rob Roy Way and Clachan an Diridh - the "stones of the ascent" - an ancient stone circle. The route then takes you out on to the moor, where the views down to Pitlochry and across to nearby hills and mountains are, on a good day, excellent. A good track takes you down to Fonab and then back to Port-na-Craig. From here, we can visit Pitlochry Dam and its famous fish ladder. There is a very good cafe overlooking the dam which is a good place to reward yourselves with a cup of coffee and a piece of lovely cake!

The walk is 12km in length, with 350m of ascent, and is classed as strenuous due to its length. It takes about 4 hours + stops.
