Glen Brerachan to Killiecrankie
This is a fantastic walk through a remote part of Highland Perthshire, passing ruined shielings and villages, a remote cottage and with some excellent views of Beinn a' Ghlo. The walk is 15 km and with 400m of ascent.
This walk passes through a remote area of Highland Perthshire. It is a one-way walk so transport can be difficult to organise - having two cars is a big advantage. The walk starts at the old road bridge at Dalnavaid in Glen Brerachan, and follows an old track by Stronhayie Craig and below Crungie Dubh. You reach the Allt na Leacainn Moire and cross a pathless area, and then pick a lovely track on the Lon Mor (which isn't on the OS map). The track takes you to the remote shielings at Druim nan Aigeach. This is a great spot for a picnic and there are excellent views of Beinn a' Ghlo.
Drop down to the remote cottage at Shinagag and pick up a track that takes you to the ruined shieling at Reinakyllich. A lonely but atmospheric place. The track then traverses the hillside to the ruined village of Loinmarstaig and then down to the Allt Girnaig. After a short distance the track crosses the river but our route follows a faint path on the E side of the stream to a water monitoring station at a well hidden waterfall. From here, the track takes you down to Old Faskally House and under the A9 to the Killiecrankie visitor centre.
The description above is not a detailed one. If you wish to try this walk, please make sure you are properly equipped and prepared, and that you have worked out the route on an OS map (the route is on the Landranger map 52 or the Explorer OL49.
