Welcome to Perthshire Treks!
Offering new walking adventures in Perthshire
After a few years of doing some work for other walking companies, we’ve decided to set up our own little walking business based in the lovely Highland Perthshire town of Pitlochry.
Perthshire is a great place to go walking, be it going up some of the hills or exploring the quieter parts. Even though we’ve lived in the area for many years, we’re still exploring and looking for new walks and finding new places to visit.
In the late Autumn, when the autumn colours were still glorious, we did a lovely walk which starts at a small estate village a few miles from Pitlochry. This is a beautiful circular walk which can be walked from one of two start points. A short way into our route, a little detour takes you to a hidden viewpoint with a great view down to one of the best historic castles in Scotland.
Leaving the viewpoint, you walk along the edge of woodland looking across a wild glen to the remains of old shielings (ancient farm buildings and field boundaries). The views are superb on a clear day. From the high moorland you descend through lovely woodland on paths made in the time of Queen Victoria with pretty stone bridges, lookouts and views over one of the best series of waterfalls in Perthshire.
After refreshments at the House of Bruar (or, in the summer, you can lunch at a historic castle, a lovely watermill cafe or have sandwiches on the hill), you head back through estate woodland above a wide valley. After passing through the grounds of the castle you return to your start point but not before a short steep climb to the spot where the last public hanging took place in Atholl in 1630. It is worth the climb though for an excellent view of the ‘fairy hill’, Schiehallion …which may be the subject of a future blog….
We hope you have a great 2019 and look forward to hearing from you.
